Winter Events at Blackstone Park

Ten winter-worthy people flocked top our Winter Birds program December 13th. It was a cold one, but we got to learn about many local birds while quickly making a collage cardinal in the style of Charley Harper. On our walk, we saw far more water birds than passerines (perching birds). There were well over 80 Mallards, many of them in male and female pairs. (Did you know that males only get their teal head color when they are 6-10 months old, often around October or November here? All summer, most of the ducks were brown.) There were also seagulls, several swans in the distance, and a Vee formation of Canada Geese. Most exciting was seeing a pair of Hooded Mergansers! We saw the female dive and come up quite a distance away and the male showed off his impressive head feathers.

Join us January 10th 2-3:30 as we explore winter tracks and the science of snow.
